We are God's people doing God's work in our community. We believe we have responsibility to encourage and provide for life-long learning throughout our individual and shared faith journey.

All are welcome whether you're in a dress and suit or in cutoffs and a t-shirt. And by all means bring the kids! They'll join a spirited group of playmates in a loving environment.

Church Picnic and New Pastor

Pastor

Our annual church picnic is after worship on Sunday, July 30. The highlight of this year's picnic is the welcoming of Rev. Laura Nile Tuell as our new pastor. We will hold a congregational meeting after worship for the purpose of electing Laura to our community. We will then shift to full picnic mode with help from Steel Rain providing live music. Join us for a very festive and enjoyable afternoon!

Meet Our New Pastor!

Pastor Laura

Rev. Laura Nile Tuell couldn’t be more thrilled to be returning to the Pacific Northwest. Laura was born in Redding, California, raised in Salem, Oregon, and spent 6 years living in Seattle, including her time at Seattle Pacific University. Laura earned a BA in Christian Scriptures from SPU and worked as a youth director at Bethany Presbyterian Church. It was there that she felt called to ordained ministry and began the ordination process in the PC(USA).

For Seminary, Laura wanted to go somewhere in the United States that had a different culture than the Pacific Northwest and so she attended Columbia Theological Seminary, a PC(USA) seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. She got exactly what she was looking for because the South could not be more different than the Pacific Northwest! While in Seminary, Laura worked at an African-American new church plant, did a hospital chaplaincy internship in Burlington, Vermont, traveled to India for her degree program, and spent a semester studying abroad in Prague, Czech Republic.

Laura’s first call was as an Associate Pastor in Dayton, Ohio. She spent two years there before the distance between her and family on the West Coast was too much to bear. She left her church and moved to Mount Shasta, California to help take care of her aging grandmother and the Nile family farm. While in Mount Shasta, Laura completed her Masters of Business Administration (MBA) online through The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, as well as an HR Certification through SHRM.

Laura is married to David, who is a high school teacher and 5th generation Tacoman. They have a 10 month old son named Jack and an adorable dog named Penny. They live in the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma and are excited to be living near so many friends and David’s family again.

Laura is thrilled to be called as Lakewood’s next pastor and looks forward to getting to know the LPC community, as well as neighboring Lakewood community. As you will soon learn, Laura is excited and passionate about many things, particularly creation care, LGBTQ+ inclusion, radical justice, and systemic injustice reforms. Laura is excited about tackling hard topics and hard problems together with the church community. In her free time, you can find Laura doing one of her many hobbies— pottery, stained glass, gardening, and going on family e-bike rides.
